Potential Links between Biomass Harvest and Biodiversity

Dr. Darren Sleep, Canadian Operations – National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI)

Darren Sleep is Senior Forest Ecologist with the Canadian operations of NCASI. NCASI is a non-profit environmental research organization that seeks to create credible scientific information required to address the environmental information needs of the forest products industry in North America. Having operated successfully in the United States since 1943, NCASI opened an office in Montreal in 2002 to serve its Canadian member companies. Dr. Sleep received a B.Sc. in Biology from the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton) in 1999, a MSc. in Biology from the University of Regina in 2001, and a PhD. in Ecology from the University of Guelph in 2006. Since January 2006, Dr. Sleep has managed NCASI’s Canadian Forestry Technical Studies Program covering projects under subject areas such as conservation planning, watershed management, and wildlife and biodiversity. His research interests focus on the links between forest management, disturbance, and terrestrial biodiversity and ecology.

Design and implementation of bio-energy strategies into forest management scenarios for Crown land in New Brunswick

Mr. Jean-Francois Carle, University of New Brunswick, Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management

Jean-François Carle completed a technical degree in forestry at the “Cégep de Rimouski” in Quebec in 1999. He graduated from the cooperative program of Sciences in Forestry at the University of Moncton in 2006, and is now taking his Masters of Sciences in Forestry at the University of New Brunswick under Dr. David MacLean’s supervision. At the end of his Bachelor studies, he earned a Gold Medal from the Canadian Institute of Forestry in recognition of outstanding scholarship and citizenship throughout the years of the program. He also won second prize for the best scientific project at the Atlantic Bioenergy Conference in 2007. Mr. Carle is interested in forest planning and bioenergy production. His Masters project is about incorporating bioenergy production into forest management strategies for Crown land in New Brunswick.

Building an index of site suitability to forest residue removal

Dr. Evelyne Thiffault, Natural Resources Canada

Evelyne Thiffault has a degree in forest engineering (2001) and a PhD in forest sciences (2006), both from Université Laval. Her doctoral studies focused on the ecological impacts of biomass harvesting in Quebec. She has been a postdoctoral researcher with the Canadian Forest Service in Quebec City since 2007, and conducts research on the effects of biomass harvesting and fast-growing plantations on nutrient cycling and site productivity.

Mapping Tool for Biomass Harvest

Dr. Paul Arp, University of New Brunswick, Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management

Paul Arp is a professor of forest soils at UNB, where he has taught and conducted soils related research since 1976. He has authored approximately 100 peer-reviewed research papers and has overseen the development of various models relevant to forest management, specifically dealing with forest hydrology, biomass, nutrient cycling, and environmental stresses including acid rain and climate change. Dr. Arp coordinates research at the Forest Soil Laboratory and at the Forest Watershed Research Centre at UNB. His current research interest led him to developing tools in forest management and operations planning, related to the mapping of forest soils and soil moisture regimes at high resolution, in a practical manner.  The wet-areas mapping tool has become a well-integrated forest management tool in the Maritimes, in industry and government, and has received attention by the Sustainable Forest Management Network and many partners across Canada.  He graduated with a BSc (Hon.) in Chemistry at Carleton University, and with a PhD (Physical Chemistry) at McGill University.
